Still waiting for gap payment, but looking at cars/trucks anyway

Last Friday I sent an email to the gap people looking for an update. Their response was “we just sent a request to the bank for a copy of the signed contract, after we get that it’ll go through the audit phase 5-7 days”.

First off, why would they not have a copy of the contract in their files? Second, WTF have they been doing for the last TWO MONTHS? If I have to make another payment before this is settled I’m going to be pissed off. The guy at the CU branch warned me it could take this long, but still. Good thing I didn’t have an immediate need for a car like most people would.

Anyway, I keep bouncing between possibilities for my next vehicle. I could get a cheap sub-$1500 beater and have no car payment, finance something super cheap (like that Accent I posted about) to take advantage of the $1000 gap provision toward a CU- financed car , or spend a bit more and get something I actually want.

Beater Pro s/Cons: No car payment, but could end up being a POS and leave me at square one.

Cheap car Pros/Cons: small car payment for short term, but could also end up being a POS.

Something I want: I really want a truck. Trucks cost more. Bigger payment, but should be reliable and hold value.

I found a couple of things in the something I want category. First is this F-150:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m amused by the “what if they made Pride motifs for disposable cups?” accents on this thing. I’m assuming it was a paint delivery truck.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Rubber floors and vinyl seats, my favorite combo

Kinja'd!!!

Can’t wait to freeze my butt cheeks off on these beauties!

It does have some accessories I don’t really need...

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It’s neat, don’t really have a use for it though...

$7900 isn’t too bad. I could keep the payments reasonable and I’d get the $1000 credit toward the loan. They seem to have had this truck for a while so maybe they’ll be flexible on the price. If only there were some place to strap that spare to the side of the bed...

The other one I found is more expensive, but lower miles and MANUAL!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Only 68k miles! I have to admit, I know nothing about the 3.7 V6/6M combo in Rams. Anyone know much about this engine? I know it was in some Jeeps and minivans.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It’s a shorty, but I won’t hold that against it.

Kinja'd!!!

More rubber floor/vinyl seat goodness.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

AUX port and A/C. No other options needed.

Kinja'd!!!

No oil or voltage gauges for you, base model!

It’s $9999 though. It’s a little more than I want to spend, but I would LOVE a manual truck again.

The more I think of things, I find myself leaning in this direction. I really need a vehicle reliable enough to make a fairly often 500-mile round-trip to visit my mom and stepdad, and if I’m going to give myself a car payment I’d like it to be something I actually want. There are other options besides a truck of course, but every time I look at a truck I find I’m much more interested.

Can confirm, retired work trucks are beat tf even if they don’t look it.

Agreed. I was a fleet manager for a courier service and we used them well. But I also kept up the maintenance religiously on my fleet so most of the ones retiring had 275k+ miles when we retired them. If I look at the first one I’ll have it inspected beforehand  for sure.

$10k for a 10 yr old FCA product with one their worst possible engines is a terrible deal, even if a manual pickup sounds like fun.

If you want a manual pickup, either spend the $30k for a Frontier or Tacoma, or $50k for a diesel Ram. Just do a 96 month loan to keep your payments low.

Odd, around here trucks with power tailgates usually command more money and tend to get sold quickly.

Gap people: Time value of money. The longer they can avoid a payout, the better. Because whatever capital fund is behind it, they’re probably doing great in their securities and want to put it off as long as possible :D

Maintenance/reliability related or drive ability? This Ram reminds me of my Ranger in that it looks like it wasn’t necessarily used for truck things often and seems like it was taken care of.

W ould it last 3- 4 years and 20-30 k miles? Because that’s how much I’m likely to use it.

Well, this one is 2WD. In Colorado a lot of buyers will turn their noses up at it just because “ OMG I NEED 4WD!!!”. I don’t have that gene.

It’ll last, but it’ll nickel and dime you. Timing chain issues, water pumps, on top of the usual Dodge electrical issues... Also I don’t think those manuals were any fun to shift. IIRC long throws, no clutch feel, etc.

I kinda feel that way, but I don’t want to end up stranded 10 miles north of Walsenburg AGAIN because my sub-$1500 vehicle shits the bed.

Holy crap, that was 20 years ago. I’m so old.

I see a bunch of stuff about carbon build up too. I’ve had some good luck in my life with engines everyone else hated or had problems with (like GM’s 2.8 V6). I think in the end it’ll be the price that steers me away from it, though. I’d prefer to keep any purchase below $8k if I can.

That is a lot for a shorty 2wd v6 truck. They’re trying to justify the low miles, is my guess.

I had one in a Jeep. It’s pretty much bad at everything. No powah, poor fuel economy. Needs spark plugs every 30k. The oil filter is located somewhere deep within the bowels of hell, and guarded by sharp things that serve no purpose beyond scratching the shit out of your arm.

Doing an oil change on one requires a chainmail sleeve to succeed without injury.

POS $1500 Ranger and AAA premium. It seems like you’re not in a hurry so you should be able to find a decent one. The worst thing to have when trying to find a really cheap vehicle is a deadline.

I literally would not sell either generation of the 3.7 to my worst enemy. The reason they don’t rank dead last in reliability is because they don’t even qualify as an engine.

It’s a more expensive but you get an extended cab, the 5.4 instead of the 4.6  and 4x4

I really like that, but it’s way more than I want to spend unfortunately. Also I have to park whatever I buy on the street in Aurora in a not-so-great area. This one might be a little too nice to do that.

Damn, I really like it though...

Not having a deadline is definitely helpful, but I do have a little bit of anxiety about not having a car.  Since I got my license in 1992, this is the first time I haven’t had a vehicle of any kind.  It’s weird and I don’t like it.

Great buys if they’ll continue to be treated as work trucks. Okay buys if you want to daily it. Even with great maintenance, they just take a lot of shit

In that case out of the two you showed I’d go for the F150. My uncle has Rams as work trucks and they seem to have a lot of problems.

I’d worry a little bit about just 2wd in the snow because there’s no weight over he back end so it’ll be easy to slide and there won’t be a lot of grip. Especially with what I’ve heard about Colorado winters.

I had a 2WD Ranger that did well in the snow. I just put 4 60- lb. sandbags in the back every winter and it was enough.

That’s almost as dangerous. I’d say wait a week or two for a nice manual truck you’ll really like to show up in your financeable price range. Having a payment for a vehicle you’re not especially fond of sounds terrible.

I wonder how hard it would be to sell the liftgate second hand and what it would be worth.

You can get mounts to stand the spare in the bed. There are several different designs. Some are marketed towards people using oversized wheels so with stock it would be sitting up really high.

I’m just laughing because there’s e-track everywhere in that bed but the tire is just flopped in there.

I was thinking about that liftgate, too.  I do have a connection in liftgate sales and maintenance from my last job and I’d probably check with them to see how hard it is to remove.
